At the recent annual meeting of the American College of Pharmacy, pharmacists from all across the country are joined by a panel of experts to discuss the latest medications that should be prescribed by their patients. The drug-makers are:
The panel members discuss the latest medications that are currently available to treat menopausal symptoms, including the first-generation drugs for which Premarin is marketed, and the new drugs that are in development.
For now, the only medications that are currently on the market that are currently approved for sale are hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which can be combined with hormone therapy, and oral contraceptives (OCs), which are only available through a doctor’s prescription. The drugs that have received FDA approval are now available through the manufacturer’s website, and are generally available for about three years.
“There’s always a need for new and innovative drugs, and we don’t want to give these new drugs the status of a first-line therapy,” said John H. Smith, president of the American College of Pharmacy. “But, we also have to be aware of the fact that there are other drugs, like the HRT, which are not approved for this use. These new drugs are not approved by the FDA, and they are not used to treat the same kinds of patients as HRT.”
Although the new drugs are designed to target the hormone imbalance that men are experiencing in their life, they also have the potential to be effective for a longer period of time. Men with hormone-related disorders, for example, are at a higher risk of developing certain conditions, including breast cancer. And, men with menopausal symptoms have a much higher risk of developing the condition.
The panel of experts concluded that menopausal symptoms are a serious concern for many men, and that they should be treated with HRT at least once a year. But HRT should only be prescribed to men with a family history of the condition.
“If you have the right HRT for your man, you should take it regularly,” said Dr. Elizabeth L. Smith, an endocrinologist and director of the Center for Women’s Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “It has been shown that menopausal symptoms are a serious problem for women, and that the drugs are not appropriate for that population.”
To learn more about HRT, the panel will be attending the recent, which will be held at the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The 2025 annual meeting is expected to be held on Oct. 11, 2025, at which time all members will be available.
“This is going to be an interesting, and exciting, year,” said David S. Schmitt, president of the American Society of Clinical Pharmacology. “This year, there is great interest from the men who are suffering.
